E.B.O.N.Y. - Frequently Asked Questions

_____________

Q: I've never played a riddle game before. How is it played?

A: Everything is explained on the first 7 levels. These levels are actually a kind of tutorial where you can learn the basics of playing a riddle game.

_____________

Q: Do I need anything special for playing E.B.O.N.Y.?

A: No. Only your browser, and certain softwares which are already installed on your computer or - if not - you can download them for free (eg. a picture editor). Plus, you'll need your brain ^_^

_____________

Q: How much levels will E.B.O.N.Y. have?

A: 200 - I mean the level numbers, not the total amount of levels. At least, the story needs about that amount of levels.

_____________

Q: Why the total amount of levels is different the highest level?

A: Some levels can be solved in different ways and according to the solution you can arrive on different pages. This is called forking. Eg. from Level 11 you can reach two entirely different Level 12s (which are not interconnected). Later, there are multiple levels with the same number and these are all entirely different levels.

_____________

Q: If you plan to create so much levels why do you leave the game alone from time to time?

A: Yes, it's a question of time. I usually have a lot to do. After all, I'm paid for my work, not for creating E.B.O.N.Y.

_____________

Q: I can't hear the background music!

A: Use another browser or, consult with your browser's settings. Eg. if JavaScript is disabled, enable it.

_____________

Q: Do I need the background music at all?

A: On certain levels you do but, in most cases, it's simply a background music.

_____________

Q: Okay, but now, I'm fed up with the background music. How do I turn it off?

A: Either it can be turned off in your browser (eg. Firefox) or you can stop loading the page itself with the corresponding icon. If it's not working you can modify your browser's settings in order to disable the background music too. (It is also possible that your browser asks for permission to play it, in this case choose 'no'.) If still nothing works, set the volume of your browser to zero (by the sound mixer of your computer).

_____________

Q: The background music is in mono. Why?

A: Mono sound files are shorter. Some of the recent musics are stereo and this fact has nothing to do with solving levels. Anyway, haven't you stopped the background music above? ^_^

_____________

Q: Can you help me in solving [a certain level]?

A: No, because solving the levels is the point of the game. However, if you need some help, you can still browse through forums. There are quite a few forums for E.B.O.N.Y. on the Internet. For example, THIS one is quite active.

_____________

Q: Why E.B.O.N.Y. doesn't have an "official" forum?

A: It used to have, but very few people used it. By the time I created it plenty of external forums existed and noone really cared about the "official" one.

_____________

Q: Don't you think that [a certain level] is too hard?

A: In theory, the higher number a level has, the harder it is. In practice, every level is different for every player. However, I usually read some of the forums and if something appears to be really unfair, sooner or later I change it somehow. (This happened many times before.)

_____________

Q: I think [a certain level] is broken...

A: ...or, you should try something else to solve it. ^_^ On the other hand, sometimes things went seriously wrong indeed. In such a case, send me an email with a description of the problem you experienced and if you're right I'll fix that level as soon as I can. (This also happened before.)

_____________

Q: I played E.B.O.N.Y. long ago and I've started it again. Right now I don't remember the name/password of the level I was before. Help!

A: Didn't I told you that you should write down all level names and passwords?

_____________

Q: In theory, [a certain level] should have asked for a username/password pair but, nothing happened, I've simply reached the next level. Is it possible?

A: It used to be so but not anymore. The old method was quirky so now you have to enter the username/password pairs manually. (It will be explained on the level you first need to do so.)

_____________

Q: By solving a level I have to use a page which is not working / unsafe / provides violent content / etc. What now?

A: (1) No levels require to visit "troublesome" webpages (eg. porn sites, malware-infected sites, domains with illegal content etc.) If you're about to end up on such a page you should try something else. (2) I test every levels. This means, everything can be solved. However, I can't monitor everything all the time and the Internet itself can change. If such a problem occours send me an email and I'll check it and modify the level if needed. (Eg. for solving the level you need to visit a page which is removed.) (3) Very rarely, the most logical attempts of solving a level lead players to a "weird" site. In this case, as I notice it I modify the level sooner or later. (This actually happened once; plenty of players reached a video, which was eventually banned - though, watching that video appeared to be logical. I've never heard about that video before. Later I changed that level.) (4) Due to the area you live, your computer's system operator (eg. at a workplace), your Internet provider, or your browser settings, certain pages of the Internet are not available. Sorry, I can do nothing about this - but, as far as I experienced, this won't cause any problems in the 99,9% of the cases.

_____________

Q: My browser says "Certain parts of this page has been disabled" (or something similar). Why?

A: It's because of the settings of your browser. Most probably, enabling JavaScript is turned off. On certain pages, E.B.O.N.Y. uses JavaScript but, it's harmless. The same goes for everything else too. Enable the required things for E.B.O.N.Y. and everything will work fine. Remember: E.B.O.N.Y. is hosted by someone and the operators would not be amused if the game spreaded any kind of malware. See also the question(s) about the background music.

_____________

Q: I reached a higher level than I searched for. Is that possible?

A: In theory, no. In practice, after a lucky guess (which lacks logic) you can get to a higher level than expected and skipping some levels. But, keep in mind that every level can contain information you'd need later. Rarely a logical guess can make you skip a few levels but as I notice it I remove the "shortcut". ^_^

_____________

Q: What are "Egg Pages"?

A: In most cases, if you guess wrong you'll get the well-known Page Not Found message. In certain cases players can reach an "existing" page by entering a wrong, or only partially correct answer as well. These can provide an additional hint for the level - or simply informs the player that they should try a different way to solve the level. Some egg pages are simply just for fun, some are mere corrections and leads to the next level (eg. if a word has different valid spellings, one is the solution while the other(s) lead to the correct page).

_____________

Q: What's a "Mystic Marvel"?

A: Those are rare pages and can be reached by doing something "twisted". Veteran players keep hunting Mystic Marvels which are giving away a bonus music plus sometimes a weird text. You don't need to find any of the Mystic Marvels for completing the game.

_____________

Q: What are Reward Screens?

A: Sometimes you can reach a secret level which leads you to a new fork. By completing the fork you'll have a kind of reward which helps you a lot later in the game. In very rare cases a single alternate solution can give you a Reward Screen too. Secret levels are much harder than normal ones. You don't need to find any secret levels or Reward Screens for completing the game.

_____________

Q: Where are the ingame characters come from?

A: Some of the characters can be familiar from other movies, games, novels, etc (see Trivia). Although their names are identical, their personalities are slightly (or not so slightly) different. Both facts are important factors in the storyline of E.B.O.N.Y. (No kidding!)

_____________

Q: How many characters are in E.B.O.N.Y.?

A: I won't tell it but you can estimate it by visiting certain pages ^_^

_____________

Q: Should I try to talk with everyone?

A: In most cases it's a good idea to ask about as many things as you can. You can get additional hints and valuable information about the story. The more you talk the more you'll understand E.B.O.N.Y. - and knowing the storyline will be really, really useful in the endgame part. As a hint I tell you that after Level 60 the total size of the possible conversations you can have with the characters appearing 'till that point was more than 23,000 words.

_____________

Q: Who's that Lisa and why are you so cruel to her? I feel sorry for her!

A: Lol, do not worry. She'll get out 100% unharmed. On a late level you'll even find out what's the point of that part.

_____________

Q: Is there a connection between the text fonts and the characters (eg. someone left a message somewhere)?

A: Unfortunately, there isn't. I planned to use a selected font for everyone but, I lost the paper on which I wrote down which font belonged to whom and since I bought a new computer I don't even have all the fonts. Text colors should match too, but they aren't. Perhaps later I'll fix this but it would take long, long time...

_____________

Q: On certain levels I can find names of characters whom I haven't been able to meet before at all. Is it a glitch?

A: No, that's normal.

_____________

Q: Who's your favorite character?

A: Well, let's see. I love writing the dialogues the players can have with Yxonumei. Max is an entertaining and useful one and I think adding LinHuan was an excellent idea. But, as a favorite I'd vote for Sukeena.

_____________

Q: Who's your least favorite one?

A: Furk - I still "can't feel his motivations".

_____________

Q: Which level do you like the most and the least?

A: Well, if I told you I'd give away information, ain't I? ^_^ The favorites are, one of the Level 48s (where a song which I like very much appears), the "Matryoshka", and the feeling of the "Promenade-part" (you'll know what I mean as you get there). The least favorite is - no surprise - Level 9. No matter how many times I made that easier it still seems to be a bit unfair. In addition, I find some of the levels "not too inspirated".

_____________

Q: Were all the tunes and the other stuffs made by you?

A: Most of them. Some pictures were originally taken by some of my friends. Some additional matter (typically music or images) were only re-used by me. You'll find the source of these stuffs somewhere. (In most cases, one level later than it was used - otherwise the information would spoil the level, wouldn't it?)

_____________

Q: Do you how a FAQ usually looks like and this one is quite far from that?

A: Yes. Do you think I care?

_____________

Q: Isn't the name of Yxonumei misspelled?

A: Yes, it is. But, I realized it too late. ^_^

_____________

Q: Do the folder names (Aylin, Beryl, etc.) mean anything?

A: Not much. Most of them are random (female) names, the "logic" behind them (which you've most probably founded out by now ^_^) helps me in the administration. (Anyway, I know a Nelly but she spells her name in a different way.)

_____________

Q: Excuse me, but... according to the gameplay, your religion must be something strange...

A: Actually, I'm a Wiccan. But, keep in mind that I have no problem with any other religions. Which means, if you're a Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, etc. you're most probably right as well. This is complicated and I'm afraid, I can't explain it in a simple FAQ. Nevertheless, if you take a certain fork in the game, you'll be able to find out which Goddess I worship ^_^

_____________

Q: Do the players surprise you?

A: To tell the truth, all the time. Such things like "useless hint" or "something which noone can find out ever" don't exist.

_____________

Q: Which was the most surprising thing ever happened?

A: Long ago, there was an unreachable page somewhere. It "looked like a level" but there was no hint for it at all. It totally was unavailable (either by link or logically) from anywhere. Even the picture and the text didn't match. Someone still found that page.
